Swine flu symptoms
Posted by fijrinroysh on June 30, 2009
Although the name ’swine flu’ brings up a lot of extra fear and worry, it is important to note that swine flu is just an influenza A H1N1 virus.
That means that it is just another type of flu virus, just like that causes our typical seasonal flu symptoms. The big difference is that the current swine influenza A (H1N1) virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses in it, so that humans don’t have any immunity to it. That makes it more likely to become a pandemic virus (have the ability to cause a global outbreak) if it can easily spread from person-to-person.
So far, even as you see swine flu cases increase on this swine flu map, experts don’t know if this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus will become a pandemic strain of flu. It could or we just continue to see sporadic cases for a few weeks or months until it stops.
We do know that swine flu symptoms are just like seasonal flu symptoms.
Swine Flu Symptoms
According to the CDC, like seasonal flu, symptoms of swine flu infections can include:
- fever, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
- cough
- runny nose or stuffy nose
- sore throat
- body aches
- headache
- chills
- fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
- diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu
Signs of a more serious swine flu infection might include pneumonia and respiratory failure.
If your child has symptoms of swine flu, you should avoid other people and call your pediatrician who might do a rapid flu test to see if he has an influenza A infection. Further testing can then be done to see if it is a swine flu infection. (Samples are being sent to local and state health departments and the CDC for confirmation of swine flu.)
Serious Swine Flu Symptoms
More serious symptoms that would indicate that a child with swine flu would need urgent medical attention include:
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Not drinking enough fluids
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Not waking up or not interacting
- Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Swine Flu Symptoms vs. a Cold or Sinus Infection
It is important to keep in mind most children with a runny nose or cough will not have swine flu and will not have to see their pediatrician for swine flu testing.
This time of year, many other childhood conditions are common, including:
- spring allergies – runny nose, congestion, and cough
- common cold – runny nose, cough, and low grade fever
- sinus infections – lingering runny nose, cough, and fever
- strep throat – sore throat, fever, and a positive strep test
What You Need To Know
- Swine flu likely spreads by direct contact with respiratory secretions of someone that is sick with swine flu, like if they were coughing and sneezing close to you.
- People with swine flu are likely contagious for one day before and up to seven days after they began to get sick with swine flu symptoms.
- Droplets from a cough or sneeze can also contaminate surfaces, such as a doorknob, drinking glass, or kitchen counter, although these germs likely don’t survive for more than a few hours.
- Anti-flu medications, including Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir), are available to prevent and treat swine flu.
- The latest swine flu news from the CDC includes advice that students should stay home if they have swine flu symptoms, but schools do not need to close unless they have large clusters of cases that are affecting school functioning. Schools that closed based on previous recommendations, such as if they had a single confirmed case or probable case, can now likely reopen.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.
How does swine flu spread?
Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

The disease is more contagious during incubation period……(ie)during the time of growth and multiplication of virus within human body before symptoms are seen…..

I am a homoeopathy doctor pratising for the past 36 years. From the newws that is available in the media I find the flu has spread in countries like Mexico i,.e., arsenic countries, which have more than 10% Arsenic. therefore my bet is that the homoeopathic remedy Arsenicum Album in higher potencies should be helpful in treating and as a palliative. Will the medical fraternity ponder over this point?

Arsenic countries? And therefore, Arsenicum Album? And your “bet” is based on it? What a nonsense! People like you are disgrace to the society. You could play your monkey game at your place where many believe any nonsense and call you a doctor.

Hi Amanda,
I’m no Doctor but can offer some idea’s. Been thru what I believe was definately that Swine flu. Nasty and sticks to ya for ages. Was at my worse for the 1st week. For the next few weeks I was taking steps forward with recovery but then steps back. It was crazy. It seemed to pick on a particular symptom and have me thinkin it was comin back, then for a day it would be smooth sailing, then it would pick another symptom I had for a day. Took quite a few weeks to notice I was coming back to normal. The best thing is that you got it 1st and can take care of your family knowing that you will probably be the 1st to recover. Trust in yourself Amanda, you know yourself and your family better than anyone. Your instincts should kick in if anyone is in need of medical attention. As I say to my family, they have the best live-in nurse they could wish for right here.
If I’m worried, we act. If your not confident with the doctor you have been seeing, best go to another just for piece of mind. It is your right. They are only human to. Cheers to you and your family Amanda. I wish you all a fast recovery. Stay in touch.

It was very useful information and once again confirmed there is nothing to scare about swine flu but take care. One of the complications is risky but there are so many people who get better after acquiring the infection. TAKE CARE.

Doctors just don’t wish to test us anymore. So who knows what we’ve got. Just had a tickly cough, lethargic as buggery. Went to bed and one hour later awoke gasping for air. I am not an asthmatic and had no phlegm. Called emergency, struggled to get my words out but just pushed so they could understand me. Was treated and taken to a doctor. Either have onset of Swine, Allergic to something?? or emphasema (spelling lol??). Was put on antibiotics and asthma stuff. Next day I had the whole flu. Sorest throat and at back of nasal passages. Completely lethargic. All I could do was breath. OMG what an experience. Went to see 2 other doctors after that, scared for my life with the breathing scare. Just wanting an answer. Non are interested in finding anything out. Same old story. I’m on the best medication or an additional script……see ya later!
Might as well live in a 3rd world country. Probably more educated

In Spokane Wa. Worried about my 19 year old daughter. She went to the dr three days ago. She had “classic” symptoms of H1N1, however, they did not test her. All the Dr told her was “if you dont feel better by Monday (tomorrow now) or if you get worse come back in. Well, tonight she is worse. She just called me and now has nausea, the sore throat, cough and nasal congestion is WORSE. I cannot believe that they did not test her last week as a precautionary measure! Did a lot of reading on this and found that WSU which isnt that far away QUIT TESTING the kids for H1N1. Too many??? Also, the CDC AND WHO are NO LONGER COUNTING CONFIRMED CASES!!!!! So much for keeping control of this virus. I found THAT information on several different links. So much for our government and CDC looking out for us. Taking my daughter to the ER is next. One of the symptoms is that the person starts feeling better and then gets worse. VERY WORRIED HERE.

Hi Lisa,
Yes, I totally understand where u r coming from. Just been thru hell with it myself. Quite a unique virus indeed. I could not stop sleeping. All I could do was breath. I’m 42 and was a smoker. Haven’t touched a smoke since it started last saturday (over a week ago). I would be sick if I even smelt it, still. Now that is unique. Still not a 100% but just know Lisa, these new flu’s r so nasty but majority of people do come thru it with memories of a nasty nasty flu. I was just put on seretide and anti biotics. Saw 3 doctors all up, and they all said that was the best for the job with plenty of water, you must try and eat (healthy) and much rest. Regaining strength is slow and must be taken steady. Cheers mate. I hope this has eased your concerns somehow. If coming on and talking at me helps, then I’m here ok.
